Josh’s Focus is on

Our Priorities

Let’s continue to send a leader to Atlanta who wants democracy to work – for everyone.

Healthcare

Abortion

  • I believe that decisions about abortion and contraceptive use should be left up to individuals–not dictated by the government. I share my neighbors’ outrage at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which eliminated a person’s right to make their most personal healthcare decisions. Now, Georgia is left with a restrictive 6-week abortion ban that Governor Kemp bragged was the “toughest abortion bill in the country” when he pushed it through the legislature in 2019. As your State Representative, I voted against restrictions on abortion access and reproductive freedom, and I will continue to fight in the State Senate for a person’s right to make their own choices about their health and contraceptive use.

Access to Care

  • Because Georgia has refused to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, our state is leaving billions of dollars on the table. To be clear, those are federal taxes you already have paid that would protect our most vulnerable citizens and lower costs for all of us. It is well past time that we make the only acceptable moral, economic, and rational choice. We must fully expand Medicaid to improve health outcomes across the state. As a State Senator, I will support legislation to expand Medicaid, support our hospitals, and save Georgians’ lives.

Mental Health

  • America is facing a mental-health crisis: nearly a quarter of Americans report feelings of anxiety or depression, or feel that their mental health treatment needs are unmet. This past legislative session, I was a proud champion of landmark bipartisan mental health legislation that ensures health insurers will pay for mental health and substance abuse treatment for those in our state who need it.

Public Safety

Gun Violence Prevention

  • Like most Americans, I am horrified by the epidemic of gun violence in this country, and I refuse to accept it as “just the way things are.” Gun violence has become the number-one cause of death for people under the age of 18. No parent should be afraid that their child may not return safely home from school. No person of faith should be afraid to pray in their house of worship. No citizen of this state should be afraid of becoming a target for gun violence because of the color of their skin or their membership in any group.

  • As a legislator, I have taken this crisis seriously. In the wake of the horrific Atlanta spa shootings, I introduced legislation to mandate a five-day waiting period for all gun sales in the state. I co-sponsored a red-flag bill and legislation to provide for background checks. And I have spoken loudly against dangerous permitless carry laws, which our own law enforcement community has said is making Georgia less safe. As your State Senator, I will continue to seek commonsense bipartisan solutions to end the American epidemic of gun violence.

Criminal Legal Reform

  • I think we would all rather live in a society that prevents crime rather than just enacting so-called “tough on crime” laws after the damage is already done. To achieve true public safety, we have to be smart about why crime happens in the first place. All too often, our laws make the problem worse. For example: many children and adults who enter jails and prisons in Georgia are recruited into gangs mere hours after they arrive. So we have to ask ourselves: if we are serious about stopping the gang violence that spills over from our prisons to our communities, shouldn’t we do something to address the crisis conditions in our taxpayer-funded detention facilities?

  • As a State Representative, I have advocated for policies that actually prevent crime, not just posturing that politicians use to act “tough.” I have supported investments in healthcare, quality education, and affordable housing that give people the opportunity they need to turn away from a life of crime. I have hosted hearings and sponsored legislation to bring awareness to the horrific conditions in our state’s prison system: crisis levels of murders, suicides, drugs, riots, and other human rights abuses that increase the risk of violence for people both inside and outside of prisons. As your State Senator, I will continue to champion criminal legal reforms in Georgia that will make all communities safer.

Victim Advocacy

  • As an attorney, I understand how intimidating our court system can be for victims of crimes. For victims of sexual violence, it can take years to process their trauma and come forward to seek help. In 2020, I was proud to cosponsor efforts to eliminate the statute of limitations for prosecutions of rape and other sexual violence. In 2021, I cosponsored a sexual assault reform bill which was signed into law by the Governor. This law creates a statewide tracking system for sexual assault kits to ensure that no victim’s pursuit of justice falls through the cracks. As a State Senator, I will always fight for the rights of sexual assault survivors and support a victim-centered response to these crimes.

Voting Rights

Protecting Your Right to Vote

  • Georgia’s state legislature shouldn’t be making laws just because Donald Trump has a hurt ego. But that’s exactly what happened in 2021. Because Trump lied to his followers and told them the election was stolen, Georgia Republicans passed restrictions on voting hours, drop boxes, and handing out water to people waiting in long lines. Their signature voter suppression bill, SB 202, also allowed state Republicans to take over local election boards that they might choose to target. Worse, these attempts to obstruct access to the ballot box disproportionately impact minority communities. I fiercely opposed these anti-democratic efforts by Georgia Republicans, and I promise that as your State Senator, I will fight for voting rights with my full strength.

Transportation

Smart, Sensible Transit Planning

  • We can’t solve traffic congestion and gridlock simply by letting the Georgia Department of Transportation build more roads and express lanes. We need creative approaches to transit that reflect the increasing density of the Metro Atlanta area.

  • As a State Representative, I stood up for neighborhoods along Georgia 400 when GDOT proposed to build tall, potentially noisy “fly-over” express lanes at the Northridge Road exit. From attending negotiations with GDOT to bringing my own decibel meter to an elementary school playground to assess the need for sound barriers, I was active in ensuring that GDOT listened to my neighbors. Ultimately, we were successful in convincing GDOT to move the lanes to an altitude where they would have less visual and sound impact on the surrounding community. During my time in the House, I also introduced legislation that would allow the state to use motor fuel taxes for any and all public transportation purposes–not just roads and bridges. As your State Senator, I will continue to respond to your concerns when it comes to transit planning, and I will continue to advocate for a modern public transit system.

Affordable Housing

Fighting for Working Families

  • The metro Atlanta area continues to grow rapidly, and with it so have housing costs. As a State Representative, I have worked to reduce housing costs for both homeowners and renters. I was proud to cosponsor legislation that created a new homestead exemption for residents of Fulton County above the age of 65. And the concerns of renters have been close to my heart because I have been one for the last five years, in Sandy Springs. I’ve seen rents go up at my own complex, and I recognize that the rising costs are simply unsustainable for working families. In 2020, I introduced a bill to protect affordable housing from developers more concerned about profits than people. In the State Senate, I will continue my efforts to expand affordable housing and keep costs down for working families.
